What are the main benefits of contract work?
One of the main benefits of undertaking contract assignments is the higher rates of pay and the associated tax benefits.
|
|
|
Contract personnel can often earn significantly higher rates of pay. This can reflect the flexible working relationship which may be required and often fixed-term nature of an assignment. However, depending on a candidate’s career stage, personal aims and lifestyle, such flexibility may be an advantage. Contract work also offers the ability to develop a wide skill set and the ability to gain experience working throughout a number of countries, companies and projects.
Companies often choose to employ contractors due to the flexibility this allows, associated cost savings, specific requirements of a given project and the cutting edge technical skills which may be required.
As opposed to permanent employees, contractors are employed via a third party umbrella company, their own personal services company or via a recruitment agency which can make the necessary PAYE and NI payments. Depending on client requirements, Petroplan’s contract assignments are generally accompanied by our Contractor Management Services which are designed to take care of the associated administrative elements involved with this type of employment – allowing the contractor to focus on delivering their technical expertise.

How does permanent employment compare?
Permanent employment offers alternative benefits to contract work, which may include a more competitive benefits package, including paid holiday and company funded training.
|
|
| |
The security of a permanent job may be more suitable for individuals who do not have such flexibility in terms of work location and the ability to accept shorter assignments. Pursuing strategic, long term goals may be more achievable when progressing within permanent positions throughout an organisation.

I’m compiling my CV – do you have any advice?
Petroplan will help you present your skills and experience within the best possible light prior to submitting your CV to a client.
|
|
| |
However, the following guide may help when creating the best possible initial draft:
Be sure to present your CV in a logical and orderly format covering your whole career history to date. All previous experience and training which is relevant to the type of role you are seeking should be included.
Detail the achievements, qualifications and professional training which will make you stand out. Positive past experience should be quantified where possible – for example how many team members did you manage, how large was the budget for which you were responsible, how many days early was the project which you delivered? Facts likes these are very effective when communicating your worth as opposed to a vague description.
A CV is designed to be a succinct snapshot of your career and achievements to date which will leave both Petroplan and our client wanting to find out more about you. A CV which is too long may mean that the key information which you would want a prospective employer to focus on is lost within too much detail.
It’s vital not to exaggerate or include work experience, qualifications or personal information which is not entirely accurate. Prior to placing a candidate, Petroplan undertakes rigorous screening therefore any discrepancies will always be identified. Therefore, it's always best to be honest from the outset.
When formatting your CV - please consider the following:
Keep attachment file sizes below 5MB as some email systems will block large messages.
Avoid inserting pictures and images as these increase the CV file size and are best sent as seperate attachments when requested by a recruiter.
Keep the layout clean and simple. Text boxes and columns can make text difficult to import and scan. Single column paragraphs are best.
Please don't send scanned CVs as these will be received as pictures and the content will be difficult to use.
