Petroplan has extensive experience in oil and gas recruitment in Canada; we have been placing candidates in the region since 2005. Thus we understand regional-specific challenges such as weather windows and the local terrain. Since the Calgary office opened we have supported over 800 contractors for major Canadian oil and gas operators.
Petroplan has worked on large scale Canadian projects across all project life cycle phases, so our experience is broad. We tailor our service to regional-specific requirements and have supported recruitment drives in both open pit mining and in-situ SAGD facilities. There is high demand for skills in Heavy Oil and Oil Sands Exploration and Development, so our local team is focused on developing specialized talent pools to meet this need. In Canada this happens mainly through on the ground networking and word of mouth. We have also been very active in building CSU Lead and Management networks. Where required we can provide onsite services by arrangement; for example we currently have a Petroplan mobilization specialist based at a client’s worksite in Fort McMurray once per week.
Meeting Specific Client Needs in Canada
After nearly 10 years of managing Incorporated Field Resources in Canada, Petroplan is fully conversant with the applicable legislation. This includes the requirement for the contractor to be Canadian and for their limited company to be registered in the work province. Petroplan routinely conducts a detailed review of all Field Resources’ paperwork to ensure they meet these criteria.
We carry out WCB checks on all contractors and ensure they have the legally mandated levels of insurance coverage. Minimum coverage is typically $1-m, but our contractors usually have coverage upward of $2-m.

To manage our company-wide Health, Safety, Environment, Quality and Social Responsibility (HSEQ & SR) activities, Petroplan operates an integrated management system based on oil and gas industry accepted “plan – do – review – improve” methodology. This goes beyond the standard requirement for oil and gas recruitment companies, so our clients can be assured of our commitment to contractor safety.
Petroplan’s HSE Manager is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer who has extensive operational, project and HSE management experience in the oil and gas industry. Therefore our clients benefit from an exceptional level of HSE expertise within our business. In Canada our HSE Manager has worked with a client in producing an EHS plan that is bespoke to the project requirements.
In providing oil and gas recruitment in Iraq, security is a key concern, and here Petroplan adds value too. For example our HSE Manager recently completed a risk assessment for our super major client in Algeria, which reduced risk and unnecessary down time. The client’s Security Manager commented that it was good to work with someone in an agency who understood site operations. Petroplan also distributes client-issued security bulletins to our contractors as soon as they are released. We also supply contractors with full contact details for our insurance providers, Medivac and Petroplan’s 24-hour emergency contact network.
For medium- and high-risk contracts Petroplan issues Field Resources with detailed Pre-Assignment Guidelines so they are aware of health and safety requirements on the client’s worksite. This typically includes the client’s own HSE policies and Code of Business Conduct policies. It also covers any procedural requirements such as worksite access protocols, facial hair policies, etc.
Petroplan incorporates client guidelines with our own procedures, to develop clear work practices for the employee. These work practices form the basis for a pre-assignment briefing that is delivered by Petroplan to the contractor.
The pre-assignment briefing depends on the assessed contract risk elements (e.g. an office location versus operational sites in a hostile environment). We also consider the contractor’s previous experience in a particular location and the expectations of our client, so that the contractor receives just the right level of detail.
Petroplan operates a formal Training and Skills Verification programme so that we can ensure contractors working on high- and medium-risk contracts are appropriately trained. Before a contractor is placed on a worksite, the client and Petroplan agree a joint responsibility matrix. This sets out what training and skills are required and who has responsibility for providing and managing the training.
We use two matrices to manage the training and skills verification process for Field Resources placed within a client’s organisation. One covers the training requirements for all roles supplied as part of the contract and the other covers all named Petroplan Field Resources. We use this one to manage individual training requirements; including follow ups and reminders about certificate expiry dates.
Petroplan is leading the oil and gas recruitment market in promoting contractor mental health and wellbeing. As career advisers to candidates; we support the need for awareness of contractor mental well being. This is particularly important as the industry usually focuses HSE only on physical safety. In Calgary there is a real need to promote mental health due to the stress caused by job losses in the oil and gas industry.
