Role Overview
Our client have an opportunity for an experienced Spools Engineer on either a Staff or Contractor basis, within the Central Engineering Department, at our Westhill Aberdeen office.
Reporting to the Pipeline and Bundle Discipline Manager and Design Team Lead, the engineer will have responsibility for a particular design and services required to ensure successful delivery of high-quality engineering to meet project, commercial and technical needs. The scope will include studies and tenders as well as projects.

Description

  • Provide relevant skills, integrity and knowledge in subsea spool engineering including design codes, legislative requirements, client specifications, and industry engineering practice
  • Carry out design analysis for subsea spools using available tools and software such as CAESAR II and in-house calculation sheets (Mathcad, Excel)
  • Take responsibility for production of high quality deliverables including preparation of Stress Analysis Design Reports, Material Take-off's, design calculations and the checking of General Arrangement and Isometric drawings
  • Provide engineering support to Tendering teams, Project teams, Field Development Group and other stakeholders
  • Operate within Company standardised engineering processes and systems
  • Ensure all relevant safety objectives and legislation requirements are observed
  • Manage all external (clients, subcontractors) and internal interfaces
  • Provide spool engineering support for the execution of multi-discipline projects in line with defined resource, budget and schedule constraints
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders such as project engineering managers, engineering departments, project personnel and supply chain management
  • Participate actively in department know-how consolidation and propose innovative solutions to reduce cost as well as risk
  • Train junior and graduate engineers

Qualifications/Experience Required

  • Educated to degree level or above in Civil or Mechanical Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer (or equivalent) or working towards this
  • In-depth knowledge of subsea spool design engineering, including design codes (specifically PD 8010-2 and DNV-ST-F101), standards and applicable software tools
  • Experienced in spool FEA based design using CAESAR II or similar software (experience with ABAQUS and basic PYTHON scripting also preferable but not essential)
  • Experience of delivery of spool design engineering including in-place analysis (specifically stress, fatigue, HISC, FIV and VIV design checks and compliance)
  • Can produce work of presentable quality
  • Can effectively work as a team member across multiple projects and good team player
  • Presents self in a professional manner appropriate to the role
  • Good organisational and time management skills and to be able to work to deadlines
  • Demonstrate integrity and respect for others
  • Ability to communicate effectively within the team and with relevant project teams

ROLE DESCRIPTION

  • Responsibility for all aspects of cost control of assigned projects including forecasting and commitment tracking of man hours, procurement activities and vessel operations
  • Provide project managers with advice and support in financially managing their projects
  • Ensure that SAP accurately reflects project costs and revenues to date, including any accruals or prepayments
  • Assist the project managers in the preparation of monthly project and financial forecasts for assigned projects
  • Assist the project manager in the preparation of a monthly financial sensitivity analysis for their projects
  • Analyse variances from as-bid financials by building a detailed monthly analysis of variances from prior forecast
  • Prepare month end project reports and review with Project Manager
  • Attend project / client meetings and provide relevant cost and financial input as required
  • Prepare and issue, or support the preparation and issue of all project invoices, including a focus on collection of payment
  • Prepare project cash flows in support of the Group's treasury requirements for cash flow forecasting
  • Develop effective interfaces with all Project functions and contribute to improvement programs;
  • build/enhance relationships with project managers to ensure communication and flow of information is effective
  • work with project managers to develop and improve reporting tools/systems and make recommendations to improve/enhance existing processes
  • Any ad-hoc activities as required

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree qualified in a Finance or Business related subject
  • Previous experience in project accounting and cost control within a similar industry
  • An interest in (or already in the process of) obtaining a recognised accounting body qualification
  • Good awareness of relevant accounting standards
  • Committed to self development
  • Confident in the use of Excel
  • Communicate effectively and articulately at all levels

Job Purpose

Leading the design and development of optimized mooring systems for floating offshore wind structures.

Job Scope

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the delivery of optimized mooring system designs for permanent offshore floating structures, including but not limited to:

  • Development of floater models and RAOs in conjunction with the knowledge transfer partnership engineer
  • Design of the mooring system considering steel chain or synthetic mooring lines in line with industry codes and standards
  • Selection of appropriate anchor systems
  • Analysis of the mooring arrangement using Orcaflex or equivalent software
  • Validate with supply chain and installation interfaces that the mooring design is fit for purpose
  • Presentation of design concepts in design reviews
  • Preparation of engineering deliverables in line with project schedule and budget

The candidate will interface with the floating structure designer and other water column product designers to optimize the system design through provision of relevant analysis output and recommendations. Projects may be located globally with a focus on shallow water design.

The candidate will also be responsible for research and development or new product development activity in the field of mooring design. This will also include consolidation of best practice, lessons learned and development of digital tools where required.

The job scope may also include opportunity to:

  • Contribute to internal and external conferences
  • Participation to review committees or JIPs for codes and standard drafting

Main accountabilities:

  • Leading the delivery of the mooring design to project schedule and budget
  • Management of key interfaces in the water column to optimize the mooring design
  • Development of the mooring system design through R&D activity
  • Consolidation of best practice and design tools. Development of digital design tools where required
  • Ensuring the quality of work issued is high and conforms to department procedures

Qualifications:

Must have:

  • Degree in naval architecture
  • 10 years' experience in the design of permanent moorings for FPSO, FSOs, FSUs, Buoys, Floating Renewables

Nice to have:

  • Offshore experience of mooring operations

Must have:

  • Experience in performing analysis of mooring systems using Orcaflex or equivalent software
  • Experience in development of RAO data for floating structures

We are a fast growing provider of innovative R&D and engineering solutions in the energy industry through our coating removal machine and subsea chopsaws with a current focus on the decommissioning market. This role would be focused on our subsea cutting tools offering. Our business is focused on providing faster, more efficient and more environmentally friendly engineering solutions to the market. We operate globally with a current team of 16 personnel primarily based out of Belfast and Aberdeen.

We are currently looking to hire an Engineer to join the team on a full time, permanent basis with an initial focus on the building, maintenance and deployment of our subsea cutting saws - the C1 chopsaw range.

The role will be based in Aberdeen and will vary significantly week to week however the core focus for the successful candidate will be the management of the engineering needs of our current saw fleet and of the subcontractors involved in the design and build to DNV standards of our new saw builds. The role will also focus on the engineering specifications and needs of integrated parts of our offering such as HPUs, reelers, hot stabs, transport skids and more as required by ongoing client demands.

The role will also be expected to be able to support with physical saw build and maintenance as well as occasional offshore operational work and client demos when demand requires although these workscopes will be primarily performed by our engineering technicians. You must be someone who has demonstrated their interface skills with ability to work with contractors and internal and client needs.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Maintain and update the functional design specification and technical specification for our products
  • Manage the project saw build schedules with subcontractors including design output, manufacture targets, DNV certifications, QA and other key elements with respect to the technical, timeframe and commercial considerations
  • Check design verification (FEA, hand calculations) in support of key products and provide details of the validation testing and inspection requirements of designs
  • Highlight and resolve any design issues following verification calculations and analysis with help of lead engineer and subcontractors as required
  • Implement improvements to manufacturing process
  • Coordinate R&D / Development projects into production
  • Support factory and site acceptance testing and commissioning activities as required
  • Research and design additional tool integrations as required, for example camera integration, hot stabs integration and high speed motor capabilities
  • Check engineering output produced by other team members and provide support to Lead Engineer and team members as required
  • Management of change on designs, documents and drawings in accordance with company procedures
  • Conduct and document design and manufacture review meetings and closeout actions
  • Input to design processes and contribute towards new or improved processes as necessary
  • Direct and mentor less experienced personnel as required during project or product design activities
  • Provide support to field operation and site integration tests for the new product/project as required
  • Raise purchase orders as required
  • Work with the financial controller to forecast and update core and auxiliary product budgets

Mandatory Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in a mechanical/hydraulic/structural tooling design environment. ROV/subsea tooling experience preferred
  • Mechanical (or similar) Engineering degree
  • Familiar with the principles of design control and PDM or other data management systems
  • Familiar with standards and specifications relevant across the energy industry
  • Commercial awareness
  • Project controls skills (reporting, planning etc.) and competence in supporting the development of cost and schedule estimates.
  • Effective communicator both verbally and written.
  • Able to work independently and within integrated local and virtual teams
  • Good computer literacy with particular competence in MS office software.
  • Full command of the English language written and spoken.
  • Flexibility for ad-hoc travel both within UK and abroad.

Preferred Requirements

  • Ability to use Solidworks and 2D CAD, to create detailed models & drawings in support of projects and products
  • Chartership through a recognised professional institute preferred
  • Use of Mathcad and SolidWorks FEA to perform design verification using first principles
  • Experience working with ISO 9001 Standards and DNV standards
  • Previous experience of working as part of a multi-discipline team on decommissioning or energy related projects
  • Knowledge of decommissioning legislation, engineering techniques, solutions and challenges
