Senior CAD Designer (Mechanical)

Location: Hersham

Permeant Staff Position

As our Senior Mechanical Designer, you will be responsible for:

  • Coordination of workload to meet schedule, quality, and budget requirements together with timely reporting on status and progress for themselves and for members of their team who may be in the UK or overseas.
  • Acting as lead designer on major projects or several small projects. Responsible for the work of less experienced designers working on their project.
  • Collaborating closely with other engineering functions and coordinating multi-functional reviews of designs.
  • Liaising with other design sections and process to agree interface details on manufacturing drawings. Take the initiative in resolving interface problems.
  • Liaising with manufacturing & vessel engineers to agree design details and manufacturing methods etc.
  • Controlling the design work hours incurred on projects that are their responsibility, anticipate workforce requirements and highlight scope and design
  • Reviewing manufacturing drawings using established check lists where available and supervise drawing reviews carried out by less experienced designers.

Your profile:

  • HNC or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience in the use of Bentley MicroStation would be an advantage, however, other CAD experience will be considered.
  • Must be aware pressure vessel and regional design codes (ASME, PED, CE Marking, UKCA)
  • Experience with equipment in cryogenic service is desirable.
  • Demonstrable experience producing equipment setting plans, general arrangement drawings and detailed fabrication drawings.
  • Working understanding and use of business management systems and the document lifecycle typical of an engineering organisation.
  • A demonstrable understanding of cross-functional interfaces and overcoming the associated challenges in an engineering/design environment for process facilities.
  • Experience leading or supervising other designers both in the UK and overseas.
  • Well-organised and enthusiastic with a sound mechanical engineering background.
  • Highly competent written and spoken communication and able to use a range of standard software such as MS Word and MS Excel.

Senior Instrument & Controls Engineer

A major client of ours in Surrey UK is seeking a Senior Instrument & Controls Engineer to join their team.

This will be a permanent staff role, with an annual basic salary and full staff package.

Hybrid working for home is also available.

Ideal candidates will live close by and have the following:

  • Degree in Control and Instrumentation Engineering or related Engineering discipline
  • 5-10 years' experience in an engineering design or operating organisation, preferably within the Process Industry
  • The ability to self-motivate and work on own initiative, as well as supporting the wider team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills enabling collaboration with colleagues located in multiple geographies, and to liaise directly with suppliers and clients.
  • Familiar with use of SmartPlant Instrumentation, including population of data sheets and specification of a range of instrumentation.
  • Knowledge in the application of Industrial Controls & Safety Systems (DCS, PLC, ESD, F&G).
  • Knowledge in the application of Process Analysers would be an advantage.
  • Familiarity with working on FEED stage project would be an advantage.
  • The ability to undertake occasional, short-term international travel for inspection, construction contractor supervision or commissioning.

Principal Piping Materials Engineer

Principal Piping Materials Engineer

Location: Hersham

Permanent Staff Position

Looking for Mechanical / Piping Materials Engineer to lead capital project execution for both the Air Separation and Process Gas Product Lines. You will provide technical expertise and specify piping, manual valves, inline items as well as complete painting and insulation specifications, and pressure test procedures.

Responsibilities include:

  • Piping Materials lead for major projects.
  • Control of project budgets (manhours and materials), schedule, quality of deliverables and reporting out on project status.
  • Proposal and project planning support. Preparing functional execution strategies and manhour estimates aligned to project scope, schedule and overall execution strategy.
  • Develop Piping Line Class Specifications when required, to suit specific service and project requirements.
  • Perform wall thickness calculations, when required, for pipe, fittings, flanges and other piping items in accordance with the applicable codes & standards.
  • Specify appropriate Piping Line Class Specifications on the Process & Instrument Diagrams (P&ID).
  • Check and approve project work.
  • Specify and create requisition packages for manual valves, pipe, fittings, flanges, and other piping items such as steam traps, strainers, etc.
  • Review vendor offerings for pipe, fittings, flanges, valves and other piping items to determine technical acceptance.
  • Develop paint and insulation requirements/specifications for products and projects.
  • Review oxygen piping systems and determine material capability.
  • Develop pressure test guidelines and procedures for project construction.
  • Perform interdisciplinary vendor squad checks for specific piping material aspects, for example inline instrumentation, mechanical equipment.
  • Actively collaborate with internal teams and external third parties to meet project commitments, costs, and schedules.
  • Create and maintain internal specifications, work instructions and job aids.

Minimum Requirements

  • Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalent and a Chartered Engineer.
  • 8 to 10 years' experience as in industrial piping materials engineering. Some experience of Pipelines would also be beneficial.
  • Proven ability as lead specialist engineer on projects.
  • Experience coordinating workload and resources including interfacing with other multi-centre design offices.
  • Working knowledge of ASME B31.3 design code and supporting ASME component and ASTM material standards.
  • Working Knowledge of the Pressure Equipment Directive/CE Marking for European projects and related experience in working with Notified Bodies.
  • Working Knowledge of EN13480 and other design codes and Country specific requirements is a strong preference (for example ASME B31.1, B31.8, B31.12).
  • Working experience with software to perform wall thickness calculations such as Red Bag PCC is a plus
  • Knowledge of the Material Management process on projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Preferred - experience of Hexagon SmartPlant tools (P&ID, Materials, Reference Data/3D)
  • Relevant design experience of ammonia, CO, CO2, hydrocarbons, hydrogen plant would be an advantage.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities;

  • Reporting to the Electrical Engineering Manager and leading the electrical scope on large megaprojects and proposals executed in the EMEA region.
  • Development of electrical single lines and power distribution systems for complex facilities
  • Performing electrical system studies including short circuit, load flow, transient motor start, protection relay coordination, and arc flash
  • Specifying and purchasing key electrical equipment such as medium and low voltage switchgears, transformers, VFD's, UPS systems, DC systems, harmonic filters, STATCOMS etc.
  • Specifying and procuring large induction and synchronous motors and starting systems including reduced voltage autotransformers, reactor start, electronic soft-start/VFD/LCI, etc.
  • Supervision of a team of Engineers on a project, plus mentoring junior Engineers within the team
  • Assigning tasks to the Electrical Design teams, providing supervision and technical expertise to ensure delivery against time and quality constraints.
  • Providing technical input to the ongoing development of company electrical design standards
  • Liaising with existing suppliers and outsourcing partners, seeking additional partners to add value to AP and customer projects.
  • Defining execution models for electrical engineering scope, monitoring performance and developing improved processes where appropriate based on lessons learned.

Skills/Qualifications Required;

  • An Electrical Engineering degree plus Chartered Engineer status, or actively pursuing Chartered status.
  • Proven experience in electrical power engineering in a design function within the process design industry
  • Good experience in a supervisory position with budget responsibility
  • Good understanding of large motors (induction and synchronous) in the range of 1-10MW. Experience with larger motors (10MW up).
  • Experience in specification and procurement of low, medium and high voltage Switchgear, Power transformers and Power electronics (LCI's, VSD's and Thyristor Controllers)
  • An ability to work with software packages for analysis of power systems (e.g. SKM Powertools or ETAP)
