Kansas City, Missouri

The Capital Projects Director will lead the clients' capital projects program, ensuring the successful delivery of projects aligned with Steering Team objectives. This role encompasses managing projects from post-development to execution and commissioning, covering a range from brownfield revamp sites to large greenfield projects. Responsibilities include project management tasks like design, procurement, and construction, along with collaboration with various contractors, vendors, technology suppliers, and the commercial team. Reporting administratively to the Senior VP of Engineering and being accountable to the Project Steering Committee, this position also involves working closely with a high-caliber technical team dedicated to advancing transportation decarbonization. The role entails issue resolution, risk management, and building strong relationships with project stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities

  • 8 years of pertinent experience in complex capital projects, encompassing custom design, technical solutions in oil and gas, and industrial processing facilities.
  • Direct leadership of large, complex projects exceeding $200 million, demonstrating expertise in FEED/EPC contract development and management.
  • Proficiency in project management within an owner's team and seamless integration across diverse groups, including professionals from project management, commercial, and design, even without prior project experience.
  • Demonstrated track record of effectively operating within substantial and intricate teams, including management or leadership of EPC teams, consisting of engineers, project engineers, and construction execution personnel.
  • Comprehensive understanding of project controls, change management, and project oversight and reporting for external stakeholders.
  • Valuable experience with revamp or brownfield projects that enhances suitability for this role.
  • Broad expertise that integrates various facets of large projects, encompassing permits, design, execution planning, contract management, procurement processes, collaboration with vendors, construction, cost estimation, and commissioning.
  • Strong commitment to continuous learning, personal growth, and implementing acquired knowledge in all work aspects.
  • Ability to work autonomously while effectively communicating and involving others when necessary.
  • Emphasis on direct, relevant experiences rather than specific degrees or years of experience; success in this role hinges on the candidate's capacity to lead a team and undertake essential tasks in project success.

The ideal candidate should have experience leading projects exceeding $200 million from concept to start-up, either as an Owner or EPC lead, or both. Alternatively, candidates with smaller project leadership experience but a clear path to managing a $200 million project are also suitable. Additional valuable attributes include familiarity with scaling up technology, managing production system or refinery projects, working with complex hydrocarbon processing equipment, handling high-pressure situations, and having exposure to operating plant environments. The ideal candidate is confidently knowledgeable, capable of advocating for project decisions while remaining adaptable to Steering Committee feedback. They are hands-on, ready to fill skill gaps within the team, and support team members rather than relying solely on contractors.
