Jaime Hewitt joined Petroplan in May 2023 as a Lead Consultant in the Houston, TX office. As her 1-year work anniversary with Petroplan approaches, we asked Jaime about her time with the Houston team so far, what she's enjoying, and how she balances her busy professional life with some personal relaxation.
Tell us a bit about your background - how did you get to where you are today?
I’ve loved sports all my life and at college I studied journalism. I spent 3 months as an athletics reporter for UATV3 and I interned in media for Tucson Football Club. After graduating, I started in the sales team for the Phoenix Suns, a professional basketball team. It was a move driven partly by financial incentives but also by a desire for new challenges – to be part of a team and the greater successes that come with more people. I knew I’d eventually make my way back to Texas (Jaime’s family are based in and around Houston). It was perfect timing when Petroplan approached me – I was ready for a bigger role and I wanted to be in Houston.
The skills I gained studying journalism created a great foundation for my role in recruitment. Knowing the right questions to understand what my client is looking for, the skills to hunt down leads to find the best candidates and then present them well, this is all informed by my journalistic background. The focus on people and strong communication informs my whole approach to recruitment.
Jaime Hewitt joined Petroplan as a Lead Consultant and was promoted to Business Manager for the Natural Resrouces team after 7 months. We asked her to describe the work culture.
Working at Petroplan is great. Petroplan fosters an inclusive culture where everyone's voice matters. I’ve often been operating in predominantly male environments. At Petroplan I've always felt heard and valued – I know my opinions carry weight. It’s a perfect balance between competitiveness and collaboration here, that propels every individual to be their best self. I am a very driven person, very competitive. I want to be the absolute best I can be, for my clients and my candidates, and be a great leader for my own team. I'm continually inspired by the leadership of Craig (McConochie, Regional Director, USA), his consultative approach and the peer support, sharing ideas and brainstorming solutions.
Outside of work, how do you relax?
I'm deeply connected to the ocean; it's my happy place. Running has recently made a comeback into my routine, it’s fits in around my volunteering and animal welfare advocacy. I've fostered over a hundred dogs, mostly puppies, which can be draining but is incredibly fulfilling. Spending time with my family is also a priority; my father is retired, and the bond we share is very important to me. My mom inspires me every day. If I can behalf as good as she is, I’ll be very proud of myself.
What are you excited about for your next year at Petroplan?
I recently reviewed my career development plan as my first work anniversary is coming up. I want to establish myself as the “go to” person in the industry for LNG, finding and representing the best candidates. I want to grow my team, get the next promotion, help them realize their potential and nurture the next great team leads for Petroplan.
On a personal level, I want to continue traveling – Spain is a top destination - exploring new horizons and making memories with the ones I love. Ultimately, I strive for a balanced life where I can make meaningful contributions both in my career and personal endeavors.
