Senior Materials Engineer

Petroplan are currently recruiting for a Senior Materials Engineer to work in the Pipeline Design team for our client in Aberdeen on a staff basis. The successful candidate will support the design and fabrication of the various Subsea infrastructure projects that the company is involved in, ensuring that materials involved are in compliance with national codes and good engineering practice.

You would be joining a culture which is both supportive and challenging, supporting others in the department whilst providing specialist support to projects. You will have opportunity to be involved in a wide range of projects involving materials ranging from HSLA steels, 13 Cr martensitic steels, duplex stainless steels, austenitic stainless steels, nickel based alloys and many other general engineering materials.

Key responsibilities:

  • Review and develop material specifications and data sheets for line pipe procurement suitable for S-Lay, Reel lay and Bundles.
  • Provide materials support to the pipeline design discipline from conceptual and Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) studies to execution and technology development projects.
  • Perform material selection and give support and recommendations to studies, tenders and projects.
  • Provide input and support to tenders and projects on materials procurement and manufacturing.
  • Provide support and ensure technical compliance for manufacturing.
  • Participate in testing and qualification activities in connection with manufacturing.
  • Interface with other stakeholders including, Pipeline Group members of welding and materials discipline, quality department, project teams, clients, subcontractors etc.
  • Liaise with other disciplines as part of studies, tenders and project work.
  • Provide materials support to the Structural discipline for spools / structural pipework including pipes, bends, fittings, flanges, valves and structures.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have:

  • A degree in metallurgy, materials technology or other suitable degree.
  • Experience working in a Subsea Materials Engineering position or similar
  • Strong knowledge of applicable materials standards and specifications.
  • Experience with welding processes, codes and standards.
  • Experience in dealing with various departments and external suppliers and stakeholders

Our client is seeking a Project Engineer (welding) Pipelines. The role will be working on a 5x3 rotational basis, based in Azerbaijan. It will be joining their Marine & Subsea team.

The Project Engineer (Welding) Pipelines is a key member of the Pipelines PMT which is responsible for delivering the offshore pipeline systems

Academic / Experience Requirements

  • Welding/Materials related degree and professional status accreditation with a recognised institution
  • CSWIP 3.2.1/3.2.2 Senior Welding Inspector or equivalent
  • CSWIP AUT Data interpretation
  • CSWIP or PCN Radiographic Interpretation (or hold CSWIP 3.2.2)
  • CSWIP/BGAS Site coatings or equivalent
  • IIMRI Flowline thermal insulation inspection
  • A minimum of 10years welding, coating and NDT offshore construction experience
  • Direct experience of pipe-lay barge operations with mechanized welding, AUT and FJC systems
  • Proven capability of contractor management

Project Engineer
Petroplan have current requirements for Project Engineers to work in our clients UK Engineering on a variety of projects in areas including IRM, Construction, ROV Intervention and Life of Field. These will be contract positions based in Aberdeen with the possibility of offshore trips
OVERVIEW OF ROLE
The Project Engineer provides engineering skills on a contract basis to projects, tendering activities, engineering studies, vessels and equipment and/or offshore engineering processes. Compliance with and delivery against project plans, relevant engineering standards and contractual obligations is required. The Project Engineer usually works as part of a team but may have responsibility for discrete work packages. He/she may be required to check technical documentation. Work may be carried out onshore, onsite or offshore, therefore there is a requirement to go offshore with this position.
The Project Engineer will ensure execution of technical project objectives and applies a working knowledge of:

  • Onshore fabrication methods and practices
  • Subsea construction techniques (diver and diverless), equipment and methods (including estimation and planning of construction and IRM activities)
  • Rigging/seafastening design, equipment and methods (including any legislative and regulatory requirements)
  • Vessel motion response theory
  • Fabrication/construction contracting methods, with good commercial awareness


All personnel are expected to contribute to creating a positive HSEQ practices.
SPECIFIC KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACTIVITIES
Onshore:

  • Develop project-specific procedures for the implementation of work to be carried out by onshore & offshore personnel in accordance with minimum standards. This includes liaising directly with clients and subcontractors.
  • Be involved in HAZID studies & TRA's of tasks detailed in the procedures.
  • Be involved in and have a good understanding of Specific Risk Assessments (isolations and barriers )
  • Be accountable for designing, checking and/or supervising the design of installation aids and other equipment required for use offshore or for use onshore in preparation for offshore activities. Carry out the supervision of this through to fabrication and delivery, ensuring that the company's quality procedures and relevant codes/standards are applied wherever applicable.
  • Be accountable for the preparation/performance or supervision of any engineering analysis of tasks relating to installation, to ensure the structural/operational integrity of the equipment during installation.
  • Select suitable equipment to perform operational tasks offshore, checking all aspects of the equipment to ensure it is operated safely and efficiently with suitable certification provided to meet statutory regulations. Also liaise with vessel departments and third party contractors to ensure all equipment is fit for purpose and fully compatible with offshore worksite.


Offshore:

  • Assist in the mobilisation/demobilisation of vessels to ensure that all equipment is handled in the correct manner and everyone involved is aware of all safety and technical aspects of the mob/demob.
  • Provide all necessary technical briefings to offshore personnel ensuring that the overall working and safety philosophy of the project is fully understood by offshore personnel.
  • Issue Procedures & Task plans ensuring that all relevant safety and quality issues to include hold witness points are included in task plan.
  • Provide technical assistance to all offshore personnel to permit work to be implemented in accordance with approved procedure to the company's minimum standard.
  • Identify any deviations from procedures and manage the change through the Management of Change process
  • Manage and document the impact of change on the schedule, as-builts or anything else relating to vessel, with the approval of Offshore Manager / Client.
  • Assist the Offshore Manager with the management of all project specific third-party contractors confirming all technical & operational aspects of the contract are observed.
  • Present / perform toolbox talks and ensure all safety and quality issues, either from TRA's or procedures, are passed to all personnel involved in tasks, (ie. hold and witness requirements).
  • Ensure that the engineering logbook is updated through each shift with a thorough handover with the opposite engineer at shift change over.

External

  • Subcontractors and suppliers for engineering and procurement activity
  • Clients for Technical Reviews, and input into tenders and studies

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Previous experience in a similar role working on IRM and Construction projects is essential.
  • Ability to function as a team member across multiple projects.
  • Sound communication skills, oral, written and electronic.
  • Ability to prioritise own workload, manage time and change control.
  • Demonstrable ability to work within time/budget constraints


QUALIFICATIONS.

  • Offshore Medical and survival certificates are essential

Experience Required:
  • An Engineering Associates degree or Higher National Certificate or a High School/Secondary School education with at least five years of experience in the design and application of engineered offshore drilling and production equipment.
  • Previous experience working for a major subsea equipment supplier.
  • Accomplishments should include having a basic understanding of engineering procedures and general manufacturing processes for oil field equipment.
  • Must be competent in 2D and 3D CAD applications. SolidWorks experience preferred.
  • Design experience related to subsea trees required. Experience with other subsea product lines including connectors, wellheads, and valves preferred.
  • Working knowledge of API 6A, 17D is required, working knowledge of API 17TR8 is preferred.

Duties:
  • Candidate will be required to interface with a multi-disciplinary engineering team and provide results against agreed technical objectives and development timelines.
  • Will be required to support development of design specifications, detailed equipment layouts, test fixture layouts, design calculation packages, test procedures, and test reports.
  • Capable of reviewing and approving detailed designs generated by others and providing feedback to improve designs as needed. Attend project meetings and provide update on status and critical issues within his/her team.
  • Position will need to support drafting tasks at times depending on team workload. Primary responsibility will be design related work.

The Pipelines Construction Team Lead is a key member of the Pipelines PMT which is responsible for delivering the safe installation of pipeline systems in accordance with Q&HSE expectations. The Construction Team Lead is directly responsible for managing the offshore pipelay vessel spread operations.

SECTION 4: ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
As a member of the Pipelines Project Management Team (PMT) the Construction Team Lead will be responsible for:

General
  • Implementing safe and efficient execution of project scopes
  • Awareness and promotion of project goals in respect of HSE, cost, schedule & technical integrity
  • Providing direction, motivation, support and leadership to project team members and contractors.
  • Maintaining awareness and promotion of expectations of Safe Design and Quality Build and conformance to the Operating Management System
  • Promoting an effective and collaborative working environment with a 'One Team' approach.
  • Providing exemplary leadership to contractors and vendors to facilitate successful scope delivery,
  • Delegate for the Pipelines Project Manager as and when required


Offshore Pipelines Construction Management
  • Managing the readiness of pipelay spread including the reactivation and mobilisation of the pipelay barge and attendant vessels (Anchor Handlers (AHTs), Pipe Carriers (PCVs) and the Survey Vessel (MSV).
  • Supporting the recruitment and developing a high performing offshore team to manage the Pipelay Barge operations
  • Managing the vessel assurance process to ensure all vessels in the pipe-lay spread are fit for purpose and meet expectations
  • Holding the Contractor to account to provide competent personnel and a high standard of resources to successfully complete the offshore pipelay operations
  • Holding the Contractor to account for project execution performance and scope delivery
  • Managing the offshore execution of pipe-lay operations including rigorous tracking of safety performance, schedule progress and SIMOPS planning
  • Managing the execution schedule for pipelay activities whilst supporting the integrated Marine & Subsea schedule
  • Managing communication with all stakeholders including operational assets to ensure the safe and efficient execution of the offshore operations
  • Managing the assurance of HSE expectations for the pipe-lay operations including the Contractor Self Verification and Oversight process
  • As a member of the Pipelines PMT the Construction Team Lead will be required to support general areas of delivery including:
  • The development of National capability and building a competent Pipelines PMT to deliver the complete scope
  • Support to general management of the Installation Contractor, Sub-contractors and Vendors
  • Working closely with the appropriate project teams to resolve conflicts in the overall interest of the project delivery
  • The capture of lessons learned and networking these in to the wider

SECTION 5: ACADEMIC / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Engineering degree and professional status accreditation with a recognised institution
  • A minimum of 10years offshore pipeline engineering and construction experience
  • Direct experience of managing anchored pipe-lay barge and attendant vessel spread operations
  • Direct Client Representative experience managing offshore pipe-lay barge operations
  • Proven capability of contractor management
  • Experience with site management activities related to health, safety, and environmental issues
  • Preferably experience with direct electrical heating cable (DEH) installation from an anchored pipelay barge
